"I'm a snowboarder."

A rich blue sky envelops me. Sun streams onto my face. The air holds still and clear. Nothing invades my space — no trees, no structures and no people — just the sky and ultra white pristine snow, soft under my ski boots and thick on mountains as far as I can see. I'm on top of the world ...

Unless you live in Aspen, Vail or other swanky ski towns, the skier's life can mean hours-long, gas-guzzling trips to the mountains to get in runs alongside hot doggers for ticket prices that, at Vail, can be as much as $85. Some cities are changing that. They're investing in smaller, low-key peaks and parks...

Every year Western ski resort owners continue to pump money into improving their product. White-hot vacations

Colorado (stltoday.com)
Every ski resort offers the same basics: snow and mountains.
After that, though, individual tastes need to be considered. If your group's headed out West and wants upscale shopping, consider Colorado's Vail or Aspen. If a picturesque mountain village sounds good, Breckenridge or Park City, Utah, will fit the bill. If short lift lines and plenty of terrain are in demand, Big Sky in Montana or Steamboat Springs in Coloroado should be considered. If spotting a celebrity sounds like fun, try Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Sun Valley, Idaho; Aspen; or Park City during the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The choice for most Brits between a short hop to the Alps and a marathon to the Colorado Rockies that lasted at least a day and could involve as many as four airports, was an easy one. We skied Europe.
