Third Race of the Season Covered 18.8 Miles
Winter Park, Colo., July 21, 2008 – Race enthusiasts flew to the third race of the Winter Park Mountain Bike Series – a valley point to point on Saturday, July 19. But no racer got there as fast as Dellys Starr (Dales Pale Ale/Spot Brand) who finished the 18.8 mile race with a winning time of 1:25:19. Starr's time was just two seconds off the fastest time set by a female rider on the course, but had the fastest pace as organizers gad to route the course and extra two tenths of a miles up and over a water crossing. Lisa Hudson (Feedback Sports), last year's point-to-point winner, settled for second in 1:31:25, and Lauren Constantini (Sycip/Schwalbe) was third in1:33:53.
For the men's pro racing, Doug Ryden (Pro Cycling Bike Shop) finished in 1:15:04. Michael Mathers (Rocky Mountain Racing) earned his third podium finish of the season, taking second in 1:15:13. Micah Joseph (bikeparts.com) was close behind in third with a time of 1:15:25. Matt Simmons (Pro Cycling) was also in reach of the leaders in fourth with a time of 1:15:58. James Morgan (Eriksen Cycles) took fifth in 1:17:14, nosing Bryan Mickiewicz (Rocky Mountain Racing) out of the top five by three tenths of a second.
In the expert category, 48 year old racer Sharon McDowell Larsen was fastest and third overall for women. Her winning time of 1:33:03 was nearly two minutes ahead of second place expert Amy Thomas (1:35:00). Maegan Daigler was third for experts in 1:39:03 and on the men's side, Kelly Niquette led experts in 1:19:41. Mike Hall placed second with 1:20:29 and Derek Strong third in 1:20:31. Lyn Franklin won the single speed category for women in 1:34:50, and Dax Massey smoked the men's single speed in 1:18:09.
In the Sport category, Tracy Thelen led the women with a time of 1:40:43, with Phyllis Woodford in second (1:41:59) and Celeste Cannon in third (1:43:02). Robert Conner led the men's sports in 1:24:01, Juan Rivero was second in 1:27:25, and Bruce Chesy finished third in 1:27:52.
The fastest beginner woman was Maggie Keller in 1:43:27. Michelle Slingsby was second in 1:45:21 and Caroline Smith took third in 1:47:40. Barry Carson led beginner men in 1:36:12, Don Bartow was second in 1:37:02, and Doug Lash was third in 1:38:49.
