Atlanta, GA –
The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) Eastern Region will host its tenth annual "Early Season Warm Up Ski Week" at Winter Park, Colorado from Dec. 1-8.  Based on event registration numbers, nearly 450 skiers, riders and winter enthusiasts from NBS clubs across the country will participate in the weeklong event.

"With less than one week before our group's arrival, there's lots of excitement.  Everyone is ready to hit the slopes.  We're checking the snow reports and getting the gear packed," said Dwayne E. Wilkins, the event's founding organizer and the NBS-Eastern Region Vice President.

"We are pleased that we will celebrate our event's 10th anniversary in Winter Park.  The resort team and greater Winter Park community have been great partners.  Together, we are planning some great on-mountain and non-ski activities.  We appreciate the cooperation and support the mountain and resort community have given us to ensure that our 10th milestone event is the best ever."

President and Chief Operating Officer of Winter Park Resort, Gary DeFrange, stated "Winter Park Resort is extremely excited and proud to be hosting the National Brotherhood of Skiers during their tenth annual Early Season Warm Up.  With so many people anticipated to attend this year's event, reservations for the Early Season Warm Up have exceeded our expectations.  We look forward to working with the group to introduce so many to the sport of skiing and snowboarding as well as show returning club members a fun and memorable time in Grand County."

Early Season Event Has Strong Track Record For Attracting New Winter Sports Fans
"It's also worth noting that while the ski industry has experienced some fluctuations in participation numbers, the NBS continues to successfully attract new winter sports fans.  We're proud of that record and appreciate the role the resorts have played in helping us maintain and develop an interest in winter sports," said Wilkins.

Nearly 150 skiers and riders were in Aspen-Snowmass for the inaugural early season event.  A well-planned week of activities, including race clinics, "ski/ride better" clinics and a unique program for "never ever" skiers and riders have helped the event grow in popularity.

"Each year when we evaluate our regional and national programs, we learn that programs like the Early Season Warm Up have been essential in recruiting new skiers, riders and winter sports enthusiasts," added Wilkins.  "While our earliest groups consisted mainly of East Coast ski clubs, today, we're proud that skiers from across the nation participate in the NBS Early Season Warm-Up as their trip of choice to begin their winter season."

Colorado remains a favorite NBS destination.  Since 1998, five Colorado resorts including Aspen-Snowmass, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs, and Winter Park as well as Utah's Snowbird, have hosted this popular and growing early season event.

Supporting The Mission Remains Top Priority
The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) was founded in 1973 in Aspen, Colorado.   From the first gathering of 350 skiers in Aspen to today's annual events that draws several thousand, the organization's mission has remained consistent – to identify, select and finance training of potential Olympic caliber minority youth.

Over the years, the NBS has created and been recognized for its youth ski and snowboard development programs.  The NBS will celebrate its 35th Anniversary in Breckenridge from Jan. 12 -19, 2008.

"There's one more aspect to our gathering that's worth noting.  Beyond the focus on skill improvement, the Early Season Warm Up Ski Week raises needed funds for our aspiring athletes.

"To date, we've raised thousands of dollars for the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund to support ski and snowboard academy scholarships and training camps.  We're especially appreciative of the Winter Park community's decision to help us support this effort," said Wilkins.

The National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc. (NBS) was founded in 1973 and chartered in 1974 by 13 African American ski clubs across the nation.  The organization was incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) designation in 1975.   Since that time, the organization has grown to 84 clubs in the United States and United Kingdom.  Today, NBS clubs are divided into four geographic regions – Eastern, Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Western.  With a membership of more than 20,000 adults and youth, the NBS is recognized as one the nation's largest ski organizations.  The organization is led by volunteers, including President Rose Thomas-Pickrum and a committed board of directors.   For additional information on the organization, please visit www.nbs.org.

The NBS Eastern region is comprised of 26 clubs from Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Combined membership for the NBS-Eastern Region clubs exceeds 6,000.  The regional leadership team includes Vice President Dwayne Wilkins and Directors Ray Campbell and Peggy Mollinow. NBS members will be available for onsite interviews throughout the week.  Please contact Kimberly King or Jennifer DeBerge for more information on Early Season Warm-Up events or to schedule interviews.
