WINTER PARK, COLO., April 16, 2009 –Winter Park Resort wraps up another great season this weekend with the Throwback to the 80’s Spring Blast party, the 41st Annual Coca-Cola Spring Splash, and a $10,000 cash giveaway for one lucky person.
Spring conditions this year are fantastic with over two feet of snow falling just this month. More snow is on the way, making the off-piste skiing and riding in both the Vasquez Cirque and Eagle Wind areas possible. But we all know that the only condition that matters on closing day is the temperature of the pond for the 41st Annual Coca-Cola Spring Splash!
April 18 - 19: Spring Blast Throwback to the 80s, Presented by Snickers
Dust off your finest day-glow apparel, straight skis and old school one-pieces and slide back to the 80s with a retro ski party meant to break all the fashion rules. Valuable prizes are up for grabs on Saturday in the third annual “Dress Your Dog Hot” contest for pet dogs and old school 80s adult costume contest both starting at 1 p.m. in the Plaza. Also take advantage of free bump tips from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the instructors at the Winter Park Resort Ski and Ride School starting from the top of the Prospector chairlift. Later, soak up the sun with an afternoon drink on the deck of Derailer Bar featuring specials and live music by Slopeside on Saturday from 12 - 4 p.m.
April 19: 41st Annual Coca-Cola Spring Splash
Starting at noon, costumed skiers and riders start out backwards before making their way through the Spring Splash challenge course, featuring obstacles like the “Bamboo Jungle” and the infamous “Mushroom Patch”. The course concludes with contestants trying to skim across an icy, cold pond of water with the hopes of making it to the other side.
Several changes have been made to this year’s event. Racers will now compete in the order in which they register and will be given a chance to guess their completion time. The skier or rider with the closest guess will win a season pass to Winter Park Resort for next season and $500. Contestants with the top three times in each category (male, female, ski and snowboard) will also win cash prizes.
To enter, participants can sign up day-of from 8 – 10:30 a.m. at the Guest Services desk in Balcony House. Watch all the action from the Plaza while grooving to the sounds of Brethren Fast from 2 – 6 p.m.
