Apex Racing's Zak Kjos was crowned J4 Junior Olympic champion - Photo by SharpShootersDanielle Brownell-Patty and Zak Kjos both started the week off with wins in the Super G, and they carried that momentum with them through the five races to win the title of J4 Junior Olympic champions. Chandler Sedberry was third with solid finishes in all five races including a GS win. For the boys, Dean Travers was just behind Kjos with a gold in GS and two silvers to take second in the overall rankings. Travis Lundin took third with four top five results during the event.

Bibbo overall winners were Mikaela Balkind and Tagert Mueller, both of Telluride. The bibbo winners were based on how many cumulative places up the rankings the skiers finished over the five races.

Drew Lazar and Anna Martin received special recognition as the Junior Olympic sportsmanship award winners for some excellent displays of sportsmanship under difficult circumstances.

Giant Slalom Courses Challenge Racers

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail's Clayton Kirwood took bronze in the morning GS - Photo by Jon NoltingOn one of the toughest giant slalom hills in the country, dropping 900 feet in elevation from the start to finish, the racers were challenged to their limit. Aspen Valley Ski Club's Danielle Brownell-Patty was up to the task, skiing to her second dominating win in the morning race with a time of 1 minute, 0.91 seconds. Steamboat racer Chandler Sedberry was second in 1:03.46 and Buck Hill's Marlee Gartner took third in 1:03.86. Megan McGrew, of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, was fourth in 1:04.91, and Quantum Sports Club's Katy Harris was close behind in fifth with a 1:05.04. In the afternoon race, Danielle Brownell-Patty went off course, opening it up for Chandler Sedberry to capture gold atop the closest podium we've seen in GS in many years. Her time of 1:02.94 was just ahead of teammate and silver medalist Serina Kidd (1:02.99) and third place finisher Marlee Gartner in 1:03.04. Team Duluth's Madison Danelski skied strongly into fourth in 1:03.98 and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail's Morgan McGonagle was fifth in 1:04.29.

Vy Nguyen was right on the gates on his way to the silver medal - Photo by SharpShootersBenjamin Throm made it an Aspen sweep for the morning races, winning the boys race in a time of 1 minute, 1.54 seconds. The boys course in particular was hard, bumpy, and steep, with big turns near the finish that challenged the racers. Aspen teammate Travis Lundin joined Throm in the medals with a second fastest time of 1:02.06. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail's Clayton Kirwood was third in 1:03.46 and Loveland's Anthony Wada was right on his tail in fourth at 1:03.48. Aspen racer Xon Baker rounded out the top five with a time of 1:04.83. The afternoon course was a bit faster, and that was to the liking of Dean Travers of Aspen who earned gold ahead of a very close field of racers. His time of 57.05 seconds was just enough to keep Apex Racing's Zak Kjos from his second gold medal, with Zak taking second in 57.16. Anthony Wada moved up a spot into third in 57.28 and Aspen skier Colby Lane took fourth in 57.42. Travis Lundin got another top five with his time of 57.67.
